DREAM SCARRED
Watercolour on 300gsm 100% rag watercolour paper
Abstract landscape, location from imagination. A dream...
COAL TIP SLIP
This piece aims to reveal the surreal qualities and beauty of coal tips across the South Wales area. There are several coal tips that pose potential hazards to the Welsh Valley towns that sit below these enormous and precarious man-made creations. This image is made via the wet plate collodion tin type process, involving an electrical charge, silver nitrate and pigment inks to form starbursts when mixed with soil and coal from a tip near Bedwas, in South Wales.
MY HEART IS WORN OUT
Cyanotype flower bouquet on 300gsm 100% rag watercolour paper.
HERE TO FOREVER
Newton Dunes in snow. Watercolour, pigment ink painting. 17" x 13" original piece in a 20" x 16" sustainable pine box frame (42mm deep).
LAST SECRET OF THE SEA
Double layer cyanolumen with acrylic paint.
GOLD AND GREEN
Using a brass base and gelatin cyanotype, the gold of the dunes and blue of the Bristol Channel shines through in this Brassotype. Marram grass runs right through the dunes. It borders the dunes and the sea and it creates a wash of vibrant gold and green as it merges with the sand and sea shore. It is an integral part of the dunes system, binding the sandy soil and holding in place the structure and very Earth of the dunes.
COMMON BLUE
Double cyanotype.
THESE MURDERING GHOSTS
This piece has been created by printing an image of the ocean on glass (captured from above with a drone), via a gelatine cyanotype process. The glass pieces are then floated above a duratrans backlit image of a shipwreck.
STAGGER OF DARK
Photographic montage, 30" x 20", in a sustainable pine box frame (42mm deep).
This piece is a memory. The landscape feeds one’s imagination and provides opportunities to move on. It’s like the wonder of a gift. It is so much better a reward to make and give than to take and have.
COG Y BRAIN
This is a cyanotype of Newton and Merthyr Mawr dunes in visual form. The foliage comes from the dunes, whilst the salt crystals and dissolved salt represent Newton beach, which runs adjacent to the dunes system. The acrylic paint shows the diversity of the environment by representing the natural spring and well. The ridge down the middle of the cyanotype is the mountainous region that runs like a spine through the centre of the dunes.
THE HILLSIDE BRACKEN SHINES LIKE THE RIVER
This ‘landcyan’ is an image made by the dunes environment. It has been created over a period of 24 hours over the dunes as wet cyanotypes, then a further 24 hours over the dunes, resoaked and ‘inked’ to allow the wind and rain to form pattern and shape. Imagery formed by sun, rain, wind and hail. Imagery made by sand, bracken, leaves and soil. This image is made by the land.
LOVE LOST AT SEA
Watercolour on 300gsm 100% rag watercolour paper
The treacherous waters of the Bristol Channel have long been navigated by waterborne vessels and on many a gale driven night or fog laden morning, many of these vessels have foundered on rocks unseen.
Whiteford Lighthouse is an unusual cast-iron lighthouse built in 1865, by the Llanelli Harbour and Burry Navigation Commissioners to mark the shoals of Whiteford Point. It is the only wave-swept cast-iron tower of this size in Britain. The tower is 44 feet high and stands just above low-water level. The base is about 24 feet in diameter and rises gracefully to a diameter of 11 feet six inches at lantern level. Around the base of the Lighthouse lies a pitched stone apron.
This painting is a narrative of foundered ships, a story of submerged doom. A story of pillars of rock that smashed wood and bent metal.
MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
Photographic montage, 30" x 20", in a sustainable pine box frame (42mm deep).
Made from 90 images, this image shows the A470 road in Wales in its entirety, in one image.
The photographs in this project portray the infamous A470 road set against the striking and beautiful backdrop of Wales. The A470 is an iconic road that links South to North Wales. This project follows 186 miles that cuts straight through the middle of Wales. This work highlights the importance of this road to me personally, as moments created whilst on the road during my life are recalled. These are moments that have shaped my being and nature. Memories past of family road trips and journeys made in more recent times are juxtaposed against the beauty of the Welsh landscape while the scar of the road is ever present, ever consistent. Moments in our lives shape us, allow us to evolve and become better people. Knowledge gained from experiences both positive and negative offer us a subliminal reference point to make informed decisions about our futures. The memories that occurred on this road are some of the most important moments to me, and they have shaped my future.
