Human action is making habitable land disappear through rising water levels and climate change. There is much research and discussion into the effects of climate change, but the majority of these theories are from a human perspective. Focusing on a vulnerable part of the Welsh landscape, Cwm Ivy in the Gower, this project aims to develop the notion of the landscape as ‘self’, to explore notions of ‘place’ within the landscape and to obtain a true perspective on opinion of climate change.
The landscape at Cwm Ivy has already faced considerable change in recent years, as sea defences have been breached and a new saltmarsh has been formed where previously a forested landscape stood. This project is the story of the future of low-level landscape, told through visual, musical, aural storytelling. The narrative of the past, present and future of the landscape will be told by the landscape itself. The landscape has a voice and there is potential to create better days, through better ways of thinking and acting.
This landscape has a voice. It has history embedded as particles within its sand and soil. It has precedent running throughout its rivers and waterways. It has a future.
